Sub- Genre
• Horror thriller (what lies beneath, kill list)
This genre of film mainly uses suspense and is very jumping. Always keeps the viewer guessing, until it reaches its climatic end.
• Horror sci-fi (Pandorum, Aliens, the thing, Apollo 18)
These usual consist of the villain being some extra-terrestrial being/s from another world.
• Horror fantasy (Under world awakening, Don’t be afraid of the dark)
Horror fantasy typically uses the viewer’s fantasies whether realistic or not to create an overall theme for the film. Fantasists usually don’t mind whether it is the villain or the hero or both who is of a supernatural quality. I find with a lot of these films that the laws of gravity are broken and they usually possess some supernatural power also, this is why these films never get boring because the possibilities are endless and wide ranging. E.G mythology, History, technology…
• Horror comedy (Beetle juice, An American werewolf in London Fright Night, Dead heads)
This genre usually plays with humour of the audience but still involves horror but less serious and intense. Usually these films are certificated for younger viewers such as 12A. So even though humoured it still needs adult super vision. Usually involves some half dim witted character who has to save the day in impossible circumstances or jokes made or referenced to. Mainly has the creep factor and jumpy had intense blood and gore. Within these films I find characters are very stereo typical too.
• Horror mystery (Dark shadows, The Thing)
These films I find play with illusions. Not only in the physical but how we always second guessing each character and how we define one another. Many of these films only reveal to you how much the main character knows which is a good effect for suspense or we know who the killer/villain is which creates this dynamic intricate ending with lots of twists and turns throughout the film.
• Horror War (R-Point, Dead Snow)
Horror war I find is a new twist on an old theme. Mainly about a battle that has resulted between the enemy and the ‘good guys’. The good guys try to defend what is theirs from being taken, tainted or defending what is theirs originally or could just be a need to survive so they try to eradicate the evil. Commonly used in Zombie films.
• Horror Historical Drama (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies)
These usually contain an old pre – century novel with elements of horror. So the time period is set in older times but with state of the art graphics for effects. I think that this genre can be particularly difficult to present because obviously at the time they didn’t have much media equipment so we can’t as easily mimic their surrounding and especially for lighting if you were to base a film for instance around the industrial age. But I think the end effect especially with all their believes and superstitions makes an equal playing field for the new and old to lay off one another.
• Horror RomCom (Shaun of the Dead)
Combines romance, comedy also horror but to a less serious effect. Typically it revolves around a day to day life of the main character when something will go wrong aka when we discover the villain or disease. The main character will then risk everything to save his loving partner and save the day, but usually with jokes and humour along the way. He will most probably have a companion to help him on the trip and it will be within the two that the jokes are made.
• Horror Paranormal (Paranormal activity, the ring, the haunting in Connecticut)
Paranormal is definitely the main point with these films. They will push our minds to what we now maybe possible which builds this greater fear because we know that it could happen to us. These mainly involve a spirit which is evil and we spend our time waiting for it to plot its next move, which gets bigger and better until the climatic end where you are felt slightly stunned. They work well with ghosts because the fact that we can’t see them builds this suspense and constant looking out but you always are caught off guard.
• Horror monster (Frankenstein, let the right one in)
Mainly about monsters which we know don’t exist but still scary because of how abnormal they are. These monsters are the villain who tries to kill humans and ultimately end up getting killed by the humans. So justice is served and peace restored. Sometimes though the monster will protect the victim and therefore a friend, so they’re not evil just above our understanding which does make them the target.
• Horror teen (Prom night, Final Destination)
Consists of Stereo typical characters which usually result in the Bitches or sluts getting killed. Also about a normal teens day to day life when something comes back to haunt them or randomly chosen victim will become taunted. Leads to a climatic end where the killer will capture the victim and their only escape is to kill the villain.
• Horror slasher (hostel, I know what you did last summer, Halloween)
Very gory and in your face. The victims are usually tortured to a grotesque state and then are killed. You see deaths from killer’s point of view for the optimum detail of the kills. Certificated for 18 because of how strong the violence is. Weapons are used all the time and victims are usually chosen at random. In the end one of the victims will escape and kill the Villain and could result in both them dying. The victims don’t stand a chance against the killer.
• Horror psychological (The Shining, The Sixth sense)
The films mess with your mind and always after you’ve left the theatre you begin to second guess everything. They sometimes hold a definitive meaning. Some revolve around a mentally ill villain who likes to mess with their victims and enjoys the cat and mouse chase. They have a lot of twists and turns and sometimes the killer is never revealed.
• Western Horror (Dead land)
Uses the set of desert films like Texas. A Cowboy environment with their old traditions and costume e.g. hat, gun cowboy boots… the cowboy will probably save the town or lover etc. from evil and be the hero.
• Horror erotica (Jennifer’s Body)
Based on the sexual side of fantasies but with a gruesome twist. The Villain will probably be a woman who tempts men and woman and then kills them. She has an unsuspecting nature so this will allow the kills to continue until she is discovered. This could take some time because people are busy looking at what she is (attractive, sexy and funny) and to who she is (a cold killer in disguise).
• Horror musical (Sweeney Todd)
Horror is consistent but the story will be told through the songs. So an insight to the characters true emotions, whereas others won’t know them or even be aware. The killer is usually a justified one whereas in this case someone has wrong him so he is justifying it.
• Horror Crime (the collector)
The horror is what originally started around a basic crime but has escalated to murder. In this case a burglar went to break into a house but when he got the thinking the house was empty the killer was downstairs about to kill his victims when he becomes aware that he’s not alone. The bugler then tries to save the victims. So the un-likeliest of heroes is their savior.
• Horror drama (the woman in black)
It is a serious type of film where the main character is tested. Never deviates from the storyline, always on track. Sometimes very emotional and has a high level actor to pull it off. Lead to dramatic end where the main character will solve the problem, be confronted by villain and even possibly die trying to help someone or do the right. Main character can often have a troubled past which will later be revealed and played against them.
• Horror romance (Red Victoria, The lost boys, Dracula)
The Good guy has had a normal day to day life when we are then introduced to the Villain. The villain will probably be attracted to the good guys lover for reasons of their own e.g. a pawn, obsession, physical attraction… this will result in the good guy willing to sacrifice his life and risk anything to save his lover. But the killer will be waiting and it will end in a bloody show down between Villain and savior.
Or the lover could be influencing their partner to kill through some twisted kind of relationship, ultimately having them to themselves.
• Horror biography (grave encounters)
Throughout the film it will use the effect of hand held camera. This gives it a real life, living in the moment effect and you only see what the character does. Sometimes they are based on true events and also they contain true filming of original events. Very good at building suspense with audience and always keeps us on our toes. Commonly when an entity makes its presents know and someone thinks it will be fun to pursue it. The activity will build until the character then realizes they have taken on more than they can handle, this later leads to everyone dying by entity or through possession of the entity.
